This is a space where I have a mid life crisis, write about my creative journey, and talk about songwriting and share bits of terrible poetry.

Mary, Broken

Written in

by

A song written 7 years ago and unfortunately still as relevant today as when it was written. It is a song about the heart of mothers in the face of watching their children die horrific deaths. Influence by the repeated cycle of gun violence ever in the news, my Catholic upbringing and love of Mary, and by Michelangelo’s beautiful sculpture “Pieta.” And my mother’s heart outraged until I am numb. There is an older version on the YouTube channel, but I rearranged it this spring and I prefer the newer version.

YouTube: Mary,Broken

Lyrics:

Mary held her son’s body broken, broken.
Held her precious son’s body broken too.

Mary watched his body be broken, broken.
stayed with her on the cross while he was broken too.

Don’t tell me it will be alright.
Don’t tell me that all is well.
Don’t tell me that he sleeps with the angels
When I am in hell.

Mary held her son as a tiny baby,
Nursed her precious son as a baby, too.

Mary wept tears for his body broken.
Mary wept tears her heart broken too.

Don’t tell me it will be alright.
Don’t tell me that all is well.
Don’t tell me that he sleeps with the angels.
When I am in hell.

Mary wept tears for their bodies broken.
Kids shot down in school, her heart broken too.

Sometime my heart needs to be broken, broken.
As long as this world in broken too.

Don’t tell me it will be alright.
Don’t tell me that all is well.
Don’t tell me that they sleep with the angels.
When we are in hell.
