This is a space where I have a mid life crisis, write about my creative journey, and talk about songwriting and share bits of terrible poetry.

Fires of the Heavens

Inspired by The Odyssey by Homer. This tale is told at the banquet for Odysseus before he finally travels home. It is the story of the unhappy marriage of Hephaestus and Aphrodite.

This was a song where I woke up from a dream with some words and an idea. And it grew from there.

I added some harmony. I like how that worked out.

I may flesh it out more. Right now it is mandolin and tenor guitar playing the same things and a hum.

Words:

Shattered into pieces
Collected melted down
The hammer shapes the metal
In water it will drown.

Shattered into piece
Collected, fed to the flames
Old memory releases
Burn away all claims

Fire of the Heavens
Work the bellows
Build the flames

Recast, Reuse, Reform
Remove all old blame.

Don’t disturb him while he’s working
Sitting in his chair
His legs incapacitate him
Thrown from his mother’s lair.

It is said he is no beauty
But the things he makes are fair.
His genius is his duty
All the cracks he will repair

Don’t underestimate this cripple
Oh, he keeps his wife in chains
Senses ever ripple
And knew when Ares came.

But mighty Aphrodite
She will not be shamed.
Love is it own fire renews
And it cannot be tamed.
