(For my 18 year old son)
Fate cracks a door open just enough to let some light through.
It stares you directly in the eye.
“I double dog dare you.”
You can’t see what’s on the otherside
Just some grayish light
and ancient dust.
It seems to be predawn of another grey day.
Like centuries of soot and sewage piled up in a black veneer, narrow streets, crowded buildings.
So far from the woods and streams where you grew up,
wild and free.
An announcer comes over the intercom
(read in the most British voice possible)
“I have some fantastic news”
(Oh Lord, this was not something that I even dared to dream for you)
And suddenly fate is staring back at you
with its cold calculating eyes
and a smirk barely visible on its lips.
Ready to kick you swiftly in the ass (err..arse?).
“I dare you. Do the unimaginable thing!”
In the underwriting, in tiny script:
(This is not a guarantee this trip will be successful.
It comes with great peril and risk.
You will only have this opportunity one time.)
What will your answer be?
