(This is a weave poem that references the words of D. Boone in the song History Lesson Part 2, Here off Double Nickel on the Dime. I wrote it yesterday morning when D. Boone’s came and sat with me in the hotel lobby. And I read it at Eaux Claires)
Mr. Narrator,
(The ghost of D.Boone walks into the room, knocks over a pile of books, sits down next to me while I drink my coffee)
This is Bob Dylan to me.
( I thumb through my brother’s record collection. A collection of spines. Double Nickel on The Dime)
“This song could be my life”
(The ghost of D. Boone sings to a thirteen year old girl
sitting in a room thick with the scent of her brother’s aftershave. Almost forty years later I still recall it precisely)
I’m his soldier child
(That record collection saved me. I taught myself to play on my brother’s old guitar)
Punk rock changed my life.
(The way his voice cracks when he says something important. I can’t be the only one sitting with his ghost this am after that incredible set.)
“This is important”
(My brother moved to Tokyo when I was 13 years old and never looked back.
Maybe I it’s time for a visit.)
