This is a space where I have a mid life crisis, write about my creative journey, and talk about songwriting and share bits of terrible poetry.

Autotune

The mistake was sticking too close to an arbitrary standard.

That pitch meant exactly one thing

440 hz is A.

You forgot the construction of the instrument.

The thing made of wood and steel

And how it vibrates.

The way the voice rises and falls

And the relativity of everything.

You have never been evenly tempered.

You are a wild and rangy thing.

Don’t forget to trust your instincts.

Breathe and Be human.

In the body.

Sing from below.

And it will rise.

Note: this is an excellent album, check it out Lambchop, Punching the Clown buddy boy on banjo, which kind of cracks me up, given my banjo playing ways of late. I know this was probably last year though. That our temporal worlds are impossibly out of sync. How lucky he is to be part of this stellar album that I have been listening to all weekend.

Second note: auto tune is a useful tool, and when it’s used judiciously or artistically that’s great. I just think sometimes people get obsessed with it in a way that is defeating, bc they aren’t really listening to the track but are watching numbers instead of trusting what they hear.

Third note: mostly suno vocals are terrible. Even when the song isn’t bad, that drives me a little crazy. Probably they will get better, and be able to fool me, or someone who is good at production can manipulate them and make it sound better, but I like human voices.
