This is a space where I have a mid life crisis, write about my creative journey, and talk about songwriting and share bits of terrible poetry.

The real thing

As an amateur.
I get the convenience.
An upright grand can’t exactly fit in the back of your car.

But I want the real thing.

Keyboards are so unsatisfactory.
And maybe I haven’t played the best ones.
But even listening to Larry Goldings at fest.
Tickling the plastic fed through an excellent amp.
Is really just a memory of what the real thing tastes like.

I can feel the difference
Hear it my fingertips.
This may be an unpopular opinion.
The reverb of wood and strings.
Particularly in a room.
They are not the same.

I listen to the wash before releasing the pedal.

I’d rather play a problematic piano.
one with an E key that keeps sticking.
depending on the weather.

The a perfectly metered and pressurized keyboard.

even if it wakes the dog sleeping upstairs.
